Built-in Image Compression During Editing

Hello OnlyOffice Team,

I would like to suggest adding a built-in “image compression feature” directly in OnlyOffice editors and web. Currently, users need to manually compress images before inserting them into documents, spreadsheets, or presentations. It would be much more efficient if OnlyOffice could compress images during editing as Microsoft or LibreOffice can do, allowing users to reduce file size without leaving the editor.

Ideally, this feature could include:

  • Automatic compression when inserting large images
  • A manual option to compress all images in the current file
  • Adjustable quality settings (e.g., high, medium, low)
  • Support for different formats.

This would greatly improve workflow efficiency and help keep document sizes manageable, especially for users collaborating on large files.

Hi @Nikolas, it could definitely be useful. For example, I have 3 slides for 14,5 Mo and without this feature, I can’t share this slide by e-mail.
Do you have an ETA for this feature?

I noticed that ONLYOFFICE v10 introduces many new AI-related features, but unfortunately, image compression is still missing.

This remains a significant limitation for users working with large presentations and documents in a professional enterprise environment.

Image compression has been available in competing presentation editors for years:

  1. LibreOffice Impress: Image-level compression — LibreOffice 4.1, February 2014.

  2. Microsoft PowerPoint: Image-level and document-level compression — documented as far back as August 2004.

  3. WPS Presentation: Image-level and document-level compression — documented by September 2021.

  4. SoftMaker Presentations: Image-level and document-level compression — documented in the 2024 edition.

This is not a new or isolated request. Several discussions on the ONLYOFFICE community forum highlight related needs that you interact with :

Taken together, these discussions illustrate a broader need for better control over document size, whether through image compression in presentations or PDF optimization.

For enterprise users, this is a real productivity issue. Presentations containing numerous high-resolution images can become unnecessarily large, making them harder to share, store, upload and manage. Having to rely on external tools to perform such a basic operation adds unnecessary steps to the workflow.

Despite these repeated requests, I have not been able to identify a public roadmap or an estimated implementation date.

Could you please provide an update on the status of this feature request?

  • Is image compression at the individual-image and whole-presentation levels being considered for a future release?

  • Is there any estimated timeframe for implementation?

  • Are there also plans to address PDF compression and optimization?

I would also be genuinely interested in understanding how you handle this in your own workflow, @Constantine. When you work with a large PPTX file, do you have workflow you would recommend? In my personnal case, my compagny use OnlyOffice desktop v10 and the rebrand Infomaniak OnlyOffice Cloud but on the kdrive, there is a limitation size to edit online pptx in Infomaniak (100 Mo) when a pptx is bigger than 100 Mo we are totally stuck, unable to modify it online, we need to download it, compress it with some custom vibecoded compressor tools and reupdate it.

I believe a clear update on this topic would be valuable to many users who rely on ONLYOFFICE for their daily professional work.

Yes, this is very important. Could also be added the automatically resizing of images when inserted in a table. Very usefull for professional reports.

When I write reports, I put a lot of images in tables I always make it 2 columns wide, each column is 7,5 cm large. When I insert an image, I have to precise the width for each image, it takes a lot of time… It would be great if the image is automatically inserted at the same width as 7,5cm large.
