Date Format - Doesn't work when selected

Ask a how-to question
Hi, I am using cloud based Only Office and on the excel I am trying to format cells so they result in a date format when the content is entered and if the wrong information is selected (i.e text) then it shows an error message. I have selected number format and then the date I want but after I select it, I can still enter anything I want in the cell. It has occasionally worked when I have done it however after doing it once, if I delete and try to re-enter the information it will then allow me to enter any format I want…can someone advise what I am doing wrong

I am using Firefox browser

Hello,
Please provide a screen recording showing step-by-step issue reproduction

I think my issue is somewhat similar and I can provide the screen grab of the same.

Steps:

  1. Add date into a column in the format MM/DD/YY
  2. Now copy another date in a different format and paste it right under the first one.
  3. Try adding the different combinations MM/DD/YYYY, DD-MM-YYYY etc
  4. Select all the dates and format them to a desired date.

Expected Result : The dates need to be formatted to the selected formatting
Actual Result : The dates remain unchanged

Additionally when I double click the cell for editing and then click away it formats correctly.

Edit: Unfortunately as a new user I am unable to upload attachments.

@joe1
Now you should be able to upload files. Please provide the screen recording of the issue reproduction for reference

I know this post is more or less 1 year old but previous users are correct!
There’s a huge and serious bug related to date formatting that can lead to wrong data!
I’ve tried this with the latest onlyoffice versions for Windows and Linux. Same results.

As a new free user I cannot upload any screen-recordings! Any suggestions?

Hello @gabdantas

You can upload your recording to a cloud storage and share a link to it. Attachments will become available after reaching next trust level of the community, please refer to my comment here: Community rules - #14 by Constantine

Thanks @Constantine
Here’s the link for the screen recording: 2026-02-17 20-32-17.mp4 - pCloud

This happens on my Windows laptop as well as my Linux laptop.

I did a workaround that seemed to work. Going into Advanced Settings and changed the Formula Language and Region to Portugal.

I use both Portuguese and English regional settings. on different spreadsheets.
Hope this helps. Thanks.

That’s exactly the cause. I can see that you are entering dates that start with a day, but it seems that regional settings had a format where the first digit of the date is the month. That is why dates with the first digit of >12, which are non-existing months, result in regular text, whereas <12 values had a correct formatting.
