Why do you force DOCX?

I really hate docx because the files always lose formating and corrupt over time. Why can’t I use ODT? Every time I try to ODT it is converted to a DOCX.

Hello @Xarcell
OOXML is the native format for ONLYOFFICE. However, other formats can be viewed or edited: Supported formats of electronic documents
If you have an issue with specific ODT file, please share it. We’ll check it out.

My point is your forcing DOCX though, why? If I start a new file, it is automatically a DOCX. To convert it to ODT, I have to “Download As” a ODT. Them I have to import the ODT. Then every time I edit the file and try to “Save” it, it is automatically converted back to a DOCX file. To avoid this, after every edit and I want to save it(ODT), I have to “Download As” an ODT file, rename it something different, them import the ODT to continue editing. This is a hassle because while other formats other than DOCX are supported, it is a struggle to retain those formats because the system pushes DOCX on you.

DOCX files become corrupted over time(every few years) because of feature updates on Word. It is not worth rewriting your DOCX files every few years just to keep them working smoothly. DOCX is only good for those who do not need to keep files long term.

Trying to maintain cross-compatability with Word is stupid. People say they want to get away from Microsoft, but then want compatibility with Word. These people should just continue to use Word because they are trapped in that sandbox, rather than expecting OnlyOffice to be Microsoft Word. OnlyOffice will struggle to onboard these people because it is NOT Word, even though most of them will say that they will switch from Microsoft to OnlyOffice if there is compatibility. They might try it, but I seriously doubt they will stay. I think it would have been better to make ODT/OOXML as default in OnlyOffice, then let users “Download As” DOCX every time they want to save. Or better yet, to simply be able to save/auto-save edits of any format.

Anyway, I’m rambling, I’ll stop now.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We truly appreciate feedback from our community, as it helps us improve ONLYOFFICE.

However, there are currently no plans to change the native document format. We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective.
