Unexpected behaviour of DELETE/BACKSPACE key other than delete character at current cursor position

OS version: Windows 10
App version: 8.3.3.21 x64

I have a PDF file that I was not able to easily convert to ODT format; so I used copy/paste of plain text without formatting and started the process of formatting correctly myself. During this process; I noticed unexpected behaviour of DELETE and BACKSPACE keys far too often.

To reproduce this issue; copy the following three lines of text into an empty text document.

82 Joannes Willems, (dezelfde als 78).
Hij trouwde, 22 jaar oud, op 24-02-1766 in Bergeijk met de 24-jarige
83 Adriana Franciscus Peters, (dezelfde als 79).

There are two spaces at the end of each line. Each line might end with a new-line or paragraph symbol; same behavour with either end-of-line character.

Position cursor before the 82 and proceed with keyboard only.

  • hold down shift key and key right-arrow key to highlight “82 Joannes Willems“; but not comma.
  • Ctrl-B to bold this text; or Ctrl-I to set italics.
  • Hit END key to position cursor at end of line.
  • Hit either BACKSPACE to remove a trailing space or DELETE to remove the newline or paragraph marker.

Very often; the cursor will NOT remove the character. Instead, the cursor will jump to either just after the bold (or italics) text and before comma; or to the top of current page (sometimes, when text is not on first page of document.

I have some questions that perhaps someone can answer:

  1. Is this expected behavour? If so, why?
  2. Was a change made to the document by this key press; if so, what was the change?
  3. I was unable to predict to which position the cursor would jump to; is it possible to predict?

Thank you for your time,
Frank

Hi @fbax, welcome to the community!

Thank you for the detailed steps — very helpful!

One thing I noticed: you’re currently on Desktop Editors 8.3.3.21, and the latest version is 9.4.0 (released May 19, 2026). There have been a lot of updates and fixes since 8.3.

Would you mind updating to the latest version and checking if the issue still occurs?

If it persists on 9.4.0, please let us know and we’ll be happy to look into it further.

Sometime between 8.3.3.21 and 9.4.0.129 this issue was resolved.
