Problem with Linux version of Desktop Editors (ONLYOFFICE)

Hello. I signed up just now to report this apparent bug. I am using the latest (as of today) version of ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors for Linux (the .DEB version). I am on MX Linux KDE 25.2. When I use X11, the taskbar icon for ONLYOFFICE (when pinned) does NOT disappear, then reappear. That is great. But when I use Wayland, the taskbar icon disappears, then reappears (this happens only when I do not open anything; only when I click on the icon, then it takes me to the home screen with the .docx, .pptx., etc., options and I quit the app - this does not happen when I open an actual file and then quit from there). I would like to use Wayland. Can someone help? Or is this a bug that the developers have to fix? Thanks.

No reply from the support team? I was hoping to hear something by now …

Update:

I did some research using Google AI, and came up with a solution. See below:

  • Open OnlyOffice. Press ALT and F3 at the same time …
  • Go to “More Actions,” then “Special Application Settings” …
  • Click on “Add Property” and select “Desktop File Name” …
  • Set the rule to “Force” and type: “onlyoffice-desktopeditors” (no quotes) …
  • Click on “Apply” and restart the app; the taskbar icon should stay put now …

I sincerely hope this helps at least a few people out there (if they’re having the same issue).

The developers need to issue a permanent fix for this problem. Maybe for the next update?

Thanks. Really appreciate OnlyOffice. Wouldn’t mind an one-time payment to support it.

Hello,

Thank you for the update and for sharing the workaround.

We were unable to reproduce the behavior in another KDE Plasma Wayland environment, so we would like to compare the configurations more closely.

Could you please provide the following information:

  • The exact ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors version: Help → About.
  • Your KDE Plasma version.
  • A short screen recording showing the behavior when ONLYOFFICE is launched from the pinned icon, no document is opened, and the start window is closed.

Please also confirm whether the issue still occurs after temporarily removing the custom KDE application rule you added.

The rule you described may serve as a workaround in your environment. Once we have the requested details, we will continue investigating the difference between the affected configuration and the environments where the issue does not occur.

Hi - I am very sorry for not having replied earlier. I actually came here to report that the same behavior is happening with OnlyOffice 10 Desktop Editors. Let’s work with that for now. (Also, side note: When I’m in OnlyOffice 10 and I open/close an Excel tab, it takes a LONG time to close it out - try seeing if that happens on your end, too.)

So, to answer your questions:

  1. The exact OnlyOffice version I am using: Community version 10.0.0.169 (x64 deb)

  2. I am on MX Linux KDE 25.3, which uses KDE Plasma 6.3.6 (and KDE Frameworks 6.13.0).

  3. The problem happened after I unchecked the rule. It stopped after I checked it again.

(Unfortunately, as a new user, I cannot upload attachments. Just FYI.)

Hopefully this is helpful. Thank you very much, and sorry again for not having replied sooner.

Am tagging @Marix here to ensure that he gets properly notified that I’ve replied here. Hope that’s OK for me to do. Just want to get this problem (and the one with Excel, too) fixed. Thanks.

Hi, @Omnimaxus

Thank you for the update and for confirming your versions and the behavior with the KDE rule enabled and disabled. No worries about the delay!

I’ve updated your forum permissions, so you should now be able to attach files. Could you please share a short video showing the taskbar icon disappearing and reappearing with the rule disabled? If recording a video is not possible, screenshots showing the icon before and after would also help.

Regarding the delay when closing spreadsheet tabs, we’ll check this on our side.

Hi, @Marix. Thanks for replying. And thanks for elevating my user rights.

That said, see attached video. I am very curious as to what your thoughts will be.

@Marix - one more thing. I just tried opening and closing multiple blank documents in different formats in OnlyOffice. Everything worked fine this time. I have no idea why this was a problem for me earlier. Very weird. (And my PC has an i7-9700, 32 GB of RAM, and a SSD.) But please feel free to play around with OnlyOffice on your end; see if you can duplicate it somehow. Or maybe it (for whatever reason) was my computer only. Maybe a cache thing. (If it was that, then maybe you could investigate the caching further.)

@Marix - looks like I spoke too soon. After I posted my last message, I played around with OnlyOffice again. The problem re-emerged. So it’s definitely present. (This was after I’d closed OnlyOffice, and re-opened it after replying previously.) Just FYI. Thanks very much.

P.S.: And please convey to the OpenOffice team they should consider an one-time lifetime fee.

Hi,

Thank you for the video and the additional information!

Regarding the taskbar icon, we’ve forwarded your case to our QA team for verification. We’ll update you here as soon as we have any news.

Regarding the delay when closing files, could you please clarify the following?

  • Does it also happen with newly created blank documents, or only with existing files? Which file formats are affected?
  • Approximately how many seconds does it take for a tab to close?
  • Does the delay occur even when you close a file without making any changes?
  • Are the affected files stored locally or on a network/shared drive?

Please also share a short video showing the steps leading to the delay, ideally starting from launching ONLYOFFICE. If the issue only occurs with specific files, please attach a sample file we can test.

Hi, @Marix - see attached video. It’s 100% self-explanatory. Thanks very much.

P.S.: I will contact the sales team and suggest an one-time lifetime fee to support OnlyOffice.
