Optimization for Interactive Whiteboards & Touchscreens (Pardus Linux / Debian)

Hello OnlyOffice Team and Community,

We are currently deploying Pardus , a national Linux distribution based on Debian (Cinnamon) , to thousands of interactive whiteboards in public schools as a free public service.

As part of this initiative, we have been testing the OnlyOffice Desktop Editors (Free Version) to serve as the primary office suite for teachers and students. While the software is visually impressive and highly compatible, we have noticed that it is not yet fully optimized for large-scale touchscreen devices.

Given the massive scale of our deployment in public education, we believe that optimizing OnlyOffice for touch-based Linux environments would be a significant value.

Are there any upcoming plans or a roadmap to implement a dedicated “Touch Mode” or improved touchscreen optimization for the Desktop Editors?

We would love to see OnlyOffice become the go-to solution for digital classrooms. Thank you for your hard work and for providing such a powerful tool to the community.

Best regards,

Hello @erdem

Thank you very much for the interest.

Can you provide more detailed description of faced problems? From version to version touch support gets enhanced, but there is always room for improvements. We would appreciate it if you could provide us a list of items that are working unexpectedly to analyze them and address in future versions of Desktop Editors.

For now I am moving this topic to general category for Desktop Editors and looking forward to your reply.

Thank you @Constantine , I will keep testing the touch functionality and will share further feedback on this thread as I encounter any issues.

Best regards

Hello again @Constantine

I want to share a pptx file with you (mevsimlerin_olusumu.pptx). In that file, there is an embedded video on the 25th slide. When in presentation mode at fullscreen, the control panel on the bottom left is not visible (touchscreen_pardus_cinnamon.jpeg). This makes the user unable to control the slides: forward, back, close, etc. The same slide on the PC has this panel on the bottom left (pc_linuxmint_cinnamon.png).

The PC and the interactive whiteboard have the same OnlyOffice version (version.png).

Since I don’t have the right to upload files in this topic, I put the download link for the files below:

Could you please examine this? What could be the cause of the problem?

Best regards.

Thank you for the reply. Just a few things to clarify:

  • Do I understand correctly that each screenshot was captured on different OS? touchscreen_pardus_cinnamon.jpeg on Pardus OS and pc_linuxmint_cinnamon.png on Mint respectively;
  • Do I understand that Desktop Editors on both systems are installed as flatpak?
  • According to the official Pardus site it has two supported interfaces (GNOME and XFCE) – which one is used on the screenshot from Pardus?

The details for the issue are as follows:

  • Do I understand correctly that each screenshot was captured on a different OS?
  • According to the official Pardus site, it has two supported interfaces (GNOME and XFCE) – which one is used in the screenshot from Pardus?
  • Pardus is installed on the interactive whiteboard, and it uses a special Cinnamon version. That’s why it is not available on the official Pardus website. Also, I have a PC, and it uses Linux Mint Cinnamon. Therefore:
  • touchscreen_pardus_cinnamon.jpeg = Captured from the interactive whiteboard with Pardus Cinnamon
  • pc_linuxmint_cinnamon.png = Captured from my PC with Linux Mint Cinnamon
  • version.png = Captured from both the interactive whiteboard and the PC
  • mevsimlerin_olusumu.pptx = Test file used on the interactive whiteboard and the PC.
  • Do I understand that Desktop Editors on both systems are installed as Flatpak?
  • Yes, that’s correct.

Thanks.

Does it use one of the mentioned interfaces too?

In terms of test, can you re-install Desktop Editors on the whiteboard with regular DEB package? Only on the whiteboard, because if I understand correctly the issue with missing controls only appears there.

No, only cinnamon.

I tried the deb package and can confirm that the problem persists. The version of the deb version is: 9.2.0.100 (deb) community release.

By the way, OnlyOffice is running at 200% interface scale on the interactive whiteboard.

Thanks.

Thank you for the test. Since the issue persists on both installations, I’d like to clarify the use case on a whiteboard:

  • Do you see slide controls before starting a video?
  • Do slide controls disappear once video on the slide is started only?

This bit of information may be useful. If you have any other details about the steps that cause this behavior, please feel free to share.
