Additional information:
It is my understanding that ONLYOFFICE (OO) can convert from PDF to .docx offline using the Desktop Editors. However when I attempted to do this, the conversion failed. The procedure I followed appears below.

I opened a pre-existing PDF file in ONLYOFFICE. This file was saved by Adobe Acrobat. With the PDF file opened within OO, I selected from the menu FILE > SAVE AS and selected the OFFICE OPEN XML DOCUMENT (*.DOCX)(.DOCX) file format option and pressed SAVE.

The above procedure did create a file with a .docx extension. However, I then opened this .docx file within Word in an attempt to edit the document. I could not edit anything. Even though my document now has a .docx file extension, Word is not able to edit the document as a normal Word file. The document appears to be treated as though its contents are an image, not a Word document. Why is this, and more importantly, how do I convert from PDF to .docx?

When checking the OO FAQ, online PDF editor guides, and Community, I found plenty of information pertaining to converting from .docx to PDF, but this is not what I want. I want to convert from PDF to .docx, and I want to do this offline because of highly sensitive information within the document.

I suspect this is due to the pdf your trying to convert

please create in only office a work doc and then save as a PDF, and the save back as docx, if this works it will be due to the PDF in question having some form of protection or none standard formatting

“If this works,” I think will demonstrate only that ONLYOFFICE can consistently convert to and from the various formats it uses in its own applications. If ONLYOFFICE cannot open an unprotected document created in Adobe Acrobat and save it as an editable .docx file, then I would think the problem lies with ONLYOFFICE, not with a document created with Adobe Acrobat.

Nevertheless, I modified your suggestion somewhat. With the end of trying to detrmine the general source of the problem, I did recently open multiple PDF files in ONLYOFFICE that originally were created by several different PDF applications or wordprocessors that could convert their wordprocessing files into PDFs. Then working in ONLYOFFICE, I saved each of those as a .docx document and subsequently opened the .docx document in Word. I had varying “success.” PDFs originally created with Adobe Acrobat and converted to .docx were somewhat editable in Word, but not entirely. Other PDFs converted to .docx were not editable at all in Word.

Here is the crux of the matter for me, I cannot control the software other people use to create PDFs. I have to use whatever is delivered to me and convert that file to .docx so that I can edit it. From my recent tests, it seems ONLYOFFICE is–at the very least–“sensitive” to PDF formatting controls. If a particular PDF has formatting not compatible with ONLYOFFICE, then the conversion to a .docx file entails problems when attempting to edit. Unfortunately, I cannot use a tool that is so “sensitive.” I appreciate the time you took to reply, but it now is clear to me that ONLYOFFICE–at least on the desktop–falls short of what I require.

Hello @ecolucci

If you decide to continue the discussion, I would like to request a sample PDF file created in Adobe Acrobat for analysis. Unfortunately, I was unable to generate a PDF with this processor that causes such issue.

By the way, we have just released new version 9.2 of Desktop Editors.
