When using Google Input Tools (IME) for Hindi typing in the OnlyOffice Web version, the Spacebar and many symbol keys (like , . ? ; : " { } | \ @ # $ % ^ & *) stop working completely.
This happens across multiple platforms and browsers. The issue is specific to the Web version and does not occur in the Desktop app.
To Reproduce:
- Open OnlyOffice Web Editor (https://www.onlyoffice.com/)
- Enable Google Input Tools (Hindi) – via Chrome Extension or website-based IME
- Try typing Hindi text (e.g., “भारत में एकता”) using phonetic input
- Try pressing:
spacebar- Punctuation keys like
, . ? ; : [ ] { } \ @ # $ % ^ &
- Keys are either unresponsive or produce no output
Expected behavior:
Hindi typing should behave normally, as it does in:
- Google Docs
- LibreOffice
- MS Word
- OnlyOffice Desktop App
Actual behavior:
- Spacebar doesn’t work
- Most punctuation/symbol keys are disabled
- Hindi letters sometimes appear garbled when pasted
- Same behavior observed in Chrome, Brave, and Firefox
Tested on:
Windows 10 + Chrome + OnlyOffice Web → Issue occurs
Linux (Zorin OS) + Chrome/Brave/Firefox + OnlyOffice Web → Issue occurs
Windows 10 + OnlyOffice Desktop → Works perfectly
Google Docs with Google Input Tools → Works perfectly
Root cause assumption:
It seems the Web version of OnlyOffice doesn’t handle IME-generated key events properly when using Devanagari (Hindi Unicode). It likely fails to forward key events like spacebar and symbols when IME is active.
Suggested solution:
Please update the OnlyOffice Web editor to support standard Unicode IME input methods (especially Google Input Tools), as used widely for Indian languages.
Workaround attempts (all failed):
- Tried Ctrl+Shift+V for plain paste
- Tried switching fonts (Arial, Noto Sans, DejaVu Sans, etc.)
- Tried Brave/Firefox
- Same issue persists
Please look into this, as Hindi (and other Indic language) support is essential for many users in India.
