Has anyone figured out a workaround? I recently switched to mac and it’s really frustrating to copy data across mutliple tabs instead of windows.
Hello @GutmenschAlex
We are still working on the mentioned feature in this thread.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the length of the situation. We will update this thread once we have something to share.
I am finding that franswateebo’s workaround is working for me on macOS
open -na "OnlyOffice"
https://ss64.com/mac/open.html
It does create multiple instances, but the RAM overhead is tiny (50-60MB), compared to what I was experiencing with my previous office product (WPS). The residual headache is keeping track of the multiple instances, and perhaps the arguable clutter in the macOS dock. Otherwise seems to do the job.
Stay FOSSy.
macOS 12.7.6
OnlyOffice 8.1.1
Hey @kjdfngrt ![]()
Thank you for sharing your experience with the workaround! We’re so happy to hear that it’s helping you, even though we understand it’s not the most ideal solution. We’re sorry that you’re having to rely on workarounds for now.
Please know that we love and value you as a user, and we’re always striving to improve.
Rest assured, staying FOSSy is a big part of our mission, and we’re committed to making sure you have the best possible experience with ONLYOFFICE. ![]()
Thank you again for your feedback and for sticking with us!
Hi,
to simplify the opening of a file with the script in a new instance of OnlyOffice, I made a shortcut with the Shortcuts app.
The shortcut is launched with a right clic in finder
Hello @ThomasB
Thank you for your sharing! I hope it will be useful for other users.
Meanwhile, we are still working on the mentioned feature in this thread and we will update this thread once we have something to share.
Oh, this is really a shame! Being able to work in two documents at the same time is crucial for my workflow (I’m a researcher). What is the timeframe for this update? I just switched to OnlyOffice and was marvelling at how good it was - until this; it could really be a dealbreaker.
Hello @ChristinaD
Thank you for your feedback! We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I cannot provide ETA at the moment.
I have added your request to our internal tracking system, and I will contact you immediately once we have update to share.
How is this feature not completed for Mac yet? The original question was posted Sep 2023. Yes, there has been a work around posted, but I know there are plenty of Mac Users that are looking for an alternative to Microsoft 365. Probably many Windows users as well, but it looks like this is already a feature in the Windows version.
Please make this a priority. Thank you.
I feel exactly the same way, we absolutely brew this on the Mac as it is already possible with Windows /Linux.
I would be delighted to receive feedback here soon.
Dear @chriskoepf and @Taimon
We appreciate your feedback and we can assure you that the mentioned feature is currently in development. Once we have something to share, we will update this thread immediately.
If you need to speed up the situation, please try to contact colleagues of mine and discuss possible options: Get dedicated support
Hi, i’m a new user and i was trying to figure out how to do a split pane in OnlyOffice. I use Linux.
This is important to me because I’m a novelist and I often need to refer to Document A while I’m writing in Document B and I do not want to tab back and forth, I want to see this side by side. It’s important enough to me that I adopted the ultrawide monitor early, even though it was expensive.
Split pane view is easy enough to do in Scrivener and in Obsidian but when I get to the editorial feedback page, I’m bound to work in .docx and this feature would make it easier, because my .docx feedback is usually riddled with tracked changes and extensive comments. porting it back to scrivener won’t keep the commenting intact.
I know it sounds like an unusual, rare use case but a lot of science fiction writers are very curious about how my process on the book I’m writing goes, so they can ditch Microsoft at last. I’d love to be able to tell them that OnlyOffice has this feature.
Hello @ordinary-writer2892
I know it sounds like an unusual, rare use case
Not at all! We discussed Creative mode recently in this thread with @Yassine : Feature Suggestion – A Creative Writing Mode for OnlyOffice (with a twist!)
I do believe your use case is more related to Creative mode implementation than to launching multiple separate editors discussed in this thread. I have added your request to internal tracksystem. I will contact you once we have something to share.
If I misunderstood the request, please clarify it.
Hi
Several months have now passed. Can you give us an update?
Hello @Taimon
We’re still working on the mentioned situation, we will update this thread once we have something to share.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the length of the situation.
Here a workaround for mac version :
- Go to “Applications” folder
- Find the “ONLYOFFICE.app”
- Right-click on it, and select “Show Package Content”
- Go to Contents > MacOS folder
- Drag and drop the “ONLYOFFICE” file in a terminal window, select the terminal window, and press “Enter” button
- This open the app (don’t close the terminal window, it will exit the app)
- If you want another window next to the first one, open a new terminal window and repeat the operation
Not user friendly but it works!
Simply double click on the “ONLYOFFICE” file in Contents > MacOS folder works too (it will open a terminal window, then the app window)
Thank you @Olivier_B for the provided workaround! I hope it will help other users while we’re working on the out-of-the-box solution.
While I think the effort to develop OnlyOffice is commendable, the lack of such a simple feature makes it impossible to recommend anyone on Mac to even try to use it in place of Ms Office.
As a non-developer community member, the best I can do is use the product and recommend it to other people, but like this it’s really impsosible to ask a Mac user to take a try, two windows to show two documents in a world where a 34" inches costs less than 1 year of MS office … you see where it’s heading.
I’m also interested in this feature, it is the only major missing piece that blocks me from recommending and rolling out OnlyOffice as a Microsoft alternative/replacement in our Mac heavy organisation.
It is disheartening to read that you still have trouble with this feature. The first time you mentioned working on it was in september 2023.
Have you been actively working on it all this time, and it is that hard, or do you keep down prioritizing it?
It’s just interesting to know if it takes time due to technical difficulties or if it is a matter of resources.
I’m either way very much looking forward to when it’s finally done ![]()
