Zotero plugin stopped working for a specific document

OS version: Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS x86_64
App version: ONLYOFFICE/9.3.1.8
Downloaded from: Flatpak
Additional information:

Like the title says Zotero plugin stopped working.

I am unable to add any citations or click the refresh button. Changing the styles and inserting the bibliography are also broken.

When doing so I get the error “Failed to refresh/ insert citation/ insert bibliography”. The connector seems to work fine as the references I just added to Zotero are visible, it seems to be the part that does something on the Document-end that goes wrong.

I tried restarting both programs, adding different citations that are already in, restarting the computer.

It does work in a new document.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards.

Hello @agroot

Please also specify version of Zotero plugin. You can find it in Plugin Manager > Zotero plugin > Info & Support tab.

If possible, please record a small video demo with the issue. Just in case, would it possible to share the document you have problems with?

Thank you for your response.

The version of the Zotero plugin is 1.0.7

Sadly I can’t make a video at the moment but it doesn’t really show anything. Just the little banner popping up on the left in the Zotero tab/window that says “Failed to refresh”. Also I am unable to share the document due to the contents of the file.

I have an update, I managed to fix it.

I was reluctantly preparing to move my entire document to a new document and I was testing the Zotero plugin as I was re-adding more of my text.

(Luckily you can copy/paste the text and Zotero will automatically remember the citations.)

As I was pasting and refreshing I found out Zotero started bugging out again after a certain bit of text was added. Afterwards I managed to isolate a singular citation that somehow breaks the entire Zotero plugin.

Strangely this citation was [22], which had appeared before already. So I assume it might’ve gotten corrupted at that part in the text, completely breaking the plugin in the process.

I deleted this citation in the original document and the problem seemed fixed.

I did however, get a popup for every citation asking me if I wanted to update said citation as “it had changed/ been updated since it was added”.

No idea what the actual cause is, but I hope this information might help as to tracking down the problem.
