WebP image support

Hello OnlyOffice Support Team,

I would like to submit a feature request regarding image format support in OnlyOffice editors.

Currently, WebP image files do not appear to be supported when:

  • Dragging and dropping an image directly into a document or a presentation
  • Using the “Insert Image” function (from file) in the Document Editor and the Presentation Editor

WebP has become a widely used format on the web, offering significantly better compression than JPEG and PNG while preserving quality. It is now natively supported by all major browsers, by Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and most modern image tools. Many images saved from the web are now in WebP format by default, which forces users to convert them to PNG or JPEG before they can be inserted into OnlyOffice documents — an inconvenient extra step in everyday workflows.

Could you please consider adding native WebP support to:

  1. The drag-and-drop image insertion in the Document Editor and Presentation Editor
  2. The “Insert > Image > From File” dialog in both editors

Ideally, this support would cover both the Desktop Editors and the Document Server / web editors.

Could you let me know whether this is already on the roadmap, and if so, what the expected timeframe might be? If a related issue or feature request already exists in your tracker, a link would be greatly appreciated so I can follow its progress.

Thank you in advance for your time and for the continued improvements to OnlyOffice.

Best regards,
Maxim

Hi Maxim,

This sounds good. I had no idea that .webp was a, currently, unsupported image format.

So get a .webp into OO without conversion is not possible, but it is possible to shorten the conversion process by opening the .webp image in a bitmap image program, like IrfanView, and tap the copy button, then paste into OO as a clipboard bitmap.

The conversion is happening, but there is no need to have a physical file in an alternate format hanging around.

Hello Maxim,
Thank you for the detailed request. WebP support is already available in ONLYOFFICE web editors / Document Server, while native insertion of WebP images in ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is not supported yet.
We already have a related internal issue registered, and I’ve added your request to it.
At the moment, we don’t have an exact ETA to share, but we’ll post an update in this thread as soon as we have any news.
Best regards.

Hello @Marix,

Thanks for you support ! Hope it will be implemented quickly, to prepare presentation, it is painfull to need to convert the image before.

I have tested on Infomaniak with the presentation Editor (Version 9.3.1.10), and I have a message “Unknow image format” when I try to import a WebP image.
