ODT file is forced saved as a DOCX

OS: GrapheneOS (Android).

Browser version: Brave.

I cannot create a ODT file by default. I have to create a DOCX then “download as” ODT. I don’t see a “save” function. If I have edited a ODT file, and try to back out, I get the prompt “save changes”, and when I click “yes”, it saves it as a DOCX file, instead of a ODT.

To save changes, I have to “download as”, select ODT, and name the file as something different.

Why can’t it be simpler than that? Like make ODT default, and add a “save” button somewhere?

PS: I am writing this on a mobile device and cannot properly select tags to add to this topic.

Do I understand correctly that you use DocSpace Cloud?

In general, ONLYOFFICE works natively with OOXML file formats (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) and we do not have plans on changing it, unfortunately.

Yes, I think forcing me to use DOCX might be a deal breaker for me.

Is there any other way of dealing with this? For example, My process is like this:

  1. New file: it automatically is DOCX
  2. Download file as ODT.
  3. Import ODT,
  4. Edit file.
  5. For every “save”, I have to “download file as”, give it a different name, then “import” file again.

In your case, the more convenient option would be to use Save Copy as instead of downloading the file and importing it again, because this allows you to save a copy in ODT format directly on the portal and skip the extra upload step.
Please note that ONLYOFFICE uses OOXML as the native working format, so ODT files are edited through conversion, and there is currently no built-in option in DocSpace to make ODT the default editing format.

Sorry, but I do not see the option “Save Copy As” in the mobile app. There is “Send Copy As” and “Download As”.

You are right — Save Copy as is not available in the mobile app (it is only available on full-size screens). Sorry for the misunderstanding.
In the mobile app, the available options are Send a copy and Download as. So in your case, using Download as is currently the closest available workaround if you need the file in ODT format.

As someone trying to get onto Open Standards AWAY from the domination of Microsoft and the USA, I find it weird that what looks to be a great alternative is actually NOT an alternative - I cannot understand that you chose MS formats as your base instead of ODT/ODF which could then be seamlessly used in OnlyOffice as well as on LibreOffice and other Open Desktop Office applications. THis is really backwards.
