Just a couple of days ago I discovered ONLYOFFICE. I was very impressed with it and I decided to switch over from LibreOffice to ONLYOFFICE for the desktop (Windows 11 professional). But after some experimentation I am discovering some problems.

# **Problems with the Windows desktop app of OnlyOffice.**

Windows 11 Pro, 25H2

ONLYOFFICE, Community version 9.4.0.129 (x64 exe)

——

I live in the Netherlands but all my software uses English (US) as the UI language. Thus also Windows 11 and Android, but also all apps that I have installed or developed myself.

## **Problems with the ONLYOFFICE DOC writer :**

I start a new document and see bellow “English – United States ” with tool-tip “ **Set text language** ” and next to it I see a world icon with tool-tip “ **Set document language** ”.

If at “ **set text language** ” I choose “Nederlands (Dutch) “ and I start typing, the “Set text language” changes automatically and immediately back to “English – United States ”. Why?

When I choose in “set document language” the Dutch language and if I type dutch words with errors, I do not get any indication of the errors (red underscores under the wrong words). If I press the “ABC” icon with tool-tip Check spelling, it does nothing, no errors identified.

If I type words with errors in a document set for English in “set document language”, it underscores the wrong words with the red lines like it should.

My problems are:

1. Spellchecking in Dutch is not working while in English it is working.

2. I do not understand the difference between “Set text language” and “Set document language”. For me both concepts sound like the same.

## **Problems with the ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet:**

I Open a _ **.ods** _ file that I had originally created with LibreOffice. I notice that the formulas have changed from ENGLISH (the original) to DUTCH. For example this is a formula I had written originally in LibreOffice;

**=IF(LOWER(D7)=“x”;0;IF(F7=1;$C7;0)**)

… This formula was changed in OnlyOffice to…

**=ALS(KLEINE.LETTERS(D7)=“x”;0;ALS(F7=1;$C7;0)**

I think it is wrong to change automatically the function names in the formulas like this ! If I want to extend the spreadsheet, I do not want to be using function names in Dutch ! I want to use function names in English like I always did. This is currently a problem for me, if I want to extend spreadsheets with more functionality: I will - unfortunately - have to go back to LibreOffice for that!

Lots of expats live and work in the Netherlands and they do not know the Dutch language. If they want to use ONLYOFFICE and are confronted with this un-requested change in the formulas, they will drop ONLYOFFICE as a tool for them.

There could be cases of Dutch users that are accustomed to write formulas in Dutch and when they open a spreadsheet with formulas in English it could be convenient for them to have the formulas converted to dutch like ONLYOFFICE is automatically doing here. For those cases, you could introduce a **settings option** to do that. Thus when a spreadsheet is opened and it contains formulas with English function names, do not translate to the local language (in this case Dutch) but offer a setting to allow for that to happen if the user wishes, for example the following option: “Translate function names in formulas to _”_ where could be ‘Dutch’.

I need to correct my posting on “ **Problems with the ONLYOFFICE Spreasheet** ” , what concerns the automatic translation of spreadsheet formulas to Dutch. Looking carefully under File→Advanced Settings I found there - under **Regional Settings** - the setting “ **Formula Language** “ allowing me to change from Dutch to English. Problem solved here!

Hello @migolio
We’re glad that the issue with formulas has been resolved.
As for the document language and text language differences. The difference is that document language is applies to entire file while text language can be applied to only part of it:
[Spell-checking](https://helpcenter.onlyoffice.com/docs/userguides/document_editor/spellchecking.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com#:~:text=The%20selected%20language%20will%20be%20applied%20to%20the%20whole%20document).
[Spell-checking](https://helpcenter.onlyoffice.com/docs/userguides/document_editor/spellchecking.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com#:~:text=To%20choose%20a%20different%20language%20for%20any%20piece%20within%20the%20document)

About the situation in general, if you want you newly created files to be in specific language, try changing pre-made templates. here’s a useful guide:

> **[Changing the default document templates](https://helpcenter.onlyoffice.com/desktop/configuration/desktop-default-template.aspx)**
>
> Learn how to change the default formatting settings for all new documents created with ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors

The point is that the editor uses pre-made template each time you click ‘Create new file’. Once this template has been changed (for example, changed document language), the updated template will be used for all new files.

Unfortunately your solution on “ **changing the default document templates** ” does not solve the problem.

I copied the directory c:\Program Files\ONLYOFFICE\DesktopEditors\converter\empty\nl-NL to another directory in drive d:, then opened the file **new.docx** in the new directory in drive d:, saw that instead of “English – United States” as the text language there was “Nederlands – Nederland” and to the right under the ‘globe’ icon there was also “Nederlands – Nederland” defined, then changed the font size to 8 instead of 11, saved the document in drive d: and then copied that modified file **“new.docx” to** c:\Program Files\ONLYOFFICE\DesktopEditors\converter\empty\nl-NL.

Then I opened ONLYOFFICE and created a new DOCX. Like previously I saw “English – United States” as the text language instead of “Nederlands – Nederland”. Changed to “Nederlands – Nederland”. The language under the ‘globe’ icon was “Nederlands – Nederland”.

But as soon as I typed a single letter the text language returned back to “English – United States”! Typing some text in dutch was giving me errors all over the place (red underlines) and right clicking on such an error was presenting me english alternatives instead of dutch alternatives.

I have been using LibreOffice for years, and I was considering switching over to ONLYOFFICE due to it’s nicer presentation, but as it is, ONLYOFFICE is not useful for me. I write in 3 more languages than English and Dutch. When I start to write, I need to define which language (for example Dutch, or French) and be able to use the dictionary of that language. Like it is now, whenever I define that I am using Dutch, ONLYOFFICE just uses the English dictionary !

Hello @migolio
What is your interface language in the app (main page \> Settings \> Interface language)?
The mentioned workaround should work for “Nederlands – Nederland” as long as the app uses the same interface language. Long story short, the app needs to know which template to use when creating a file. This is determined by the app’s interface language: [Changing the default document templates](https://helpcenter.onlyoffice.com/desktop/configuration/desktop-default-template.aspx#:~:text=Open%20the%20locale%20folder%20that%20corresponds%20to%20the%20interface%20language%20you%20use%2C)

Hello Alexandre. My interface language is US-English and I am not going to change it to Dutch or French or whatever. The document language is variable, sometimes Dutch, sometimes English, sometimes French. This is the way other apps work (like LibreOffice) and as I described before, ONLYOFFICE is not working as it should. If I was you, I would classify this as a BUG that is preventing several users of adopting ONLYOFFICE as their preferred office package.
