# Multilevel list default indentation levels

I use multilevel bulleted lists **A LOT.** The default indentations for each level of the list do not suit my needs (too much wasted space, especially as level increases).
I understand how to change the indentation levels for a list, but I was shocked to find that changes are **LOST** for the next list in the document, let alone in new documents. It appears I must go through the reconfiguration process for **EVERY** list I create (if I have missed something, please correct me).
**Consistent list formats** are an essential aspect of document styling. It should be possible to change the **default** indentations and characters associated with each level in a list, either by setting them in the document template (this did not seem to work for me) or through the _Home \> Multilevel lists_ dialog.
