File size reduced when switching from Microsoft Excel 2016

Hi,

I want to switch to Linux as my daily driver and am looking for an alternative to Microsoft Office 2016. I am giving OnlyOffice a try and just tried opening a large-ish spreadsheet (883kB). Then I tried saving the file and its size reduced to 738kB. Should I be worried about that? Or is OnlyOffice just optimizing something that my quite old version of Excel does not? I can’t see any difference when reopening the file, but the document has many sheets, so I might miss something.

OS version: Windows 10
App version: Community version 9.1.0.167 (x86 exe)
Downloaded from: ONLYOFFICE website
Microsoft Excel version: Microsoft Excel 2016

All the best

Hey @tecgyver,

Thanks for sharing your experience switching to ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors (v9.1.0.167) from Microsoft Excel 2016! The file size reduction from 883kB to 738kB after saving in ONLYOFFICE is normal behavior for .xlsx files (and also .docx/.pptx). This happens because Microsoft Office adds extra metadata or service information that ONLYOFFICE optimizes or removes when saving, resulting in a slightly smaller file size.

No need to worry unless you notice any data loss or differences in the content. If you spot anything missing in the spreadsheet (especially with multiple sheets), please let us know here, and we’ll dive into it right away!

Best of luck with your Linux transition! :hugs:
