The following subtypes of surface diagrams can be distinguished, which can be considered as styles of one type of diagram:
- A volumetric surface diagram is a standard diagram type.
- A wire surface diagram is a three—dimensional diagram that is a wireframe and displays only lines.
- A contour diagram is a diagram representing an overhead view of a surface diagram where the colors represent ranges of values.
- A contour wire diagram is a diagram representing an overhead view of a surface diagram, but without shaded areas.
